pieced from bright scraps of cotton collected from shirts and dresses that were too worn out to wear, but too good to throw away; quilted with family and friends gathered around
a suspended frame that had been constructed by my Uncle.

What I didn't realize as a twelve year old,
but came to realize as I grew older, was that the Gift was in the sharing of heritage and the love and commitment to community that cemented past generations together. When I learned about the "Quilt Trail" I was so happy to add my tribute to my Grandmother, who continues to inspire me in so many ways although she has passed on. She once told me, "see, Barbara, this is the maple leaf pattern, but if you turn it this way it is flying geese." My barn quilt represents my Grandmother's flying geese, headed south, where she was from, flying over a log cabin (which I am told is supposed to have "fire" in the "hearth"). I love you Grandma. |
